What happens in the conversation?

You do not need to prepare anything. Patrick starts with a few questions about your goals and how you have learned English so far.

Then he asks a few speaking questions. These give you time to talk for about 2 to 3 minutes per answer. Your longer answers give SpeakTape a sample of your speaking to analyze.

The English Lab calls this first conversation a diagnostic. Patrick is a CELTA-certified English teacher and the current tutor at The English Lab.

What will your report tell you?

Your SpeakTape includes strengths, useful changes, and examples from your conversation. It also includes an estimate of the speaking you demonstrated, using the CEFR levels and the areas of range, accuracy, fluency, interaction, and coherence.

This is feedback on one conversation. It is not an official exam result or a language certificate.

AI helps draft the report from the recording. Patrick checks the feedback before sharing it in your private account. Your report may still be waiting for review when the call ends. Read how Patrick reviews your report.

Before you choose a time

• Choose an available time in your timezone, at least 12 hours ahead.
• Read and accept the recording notice in the booking form.
• Use a quiet place and a working microphone. Headphones can help.
• No materials or prepared answers are needed. Patrick provides the questions.
